What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is an artificial tooth which looks and feels like the real thing; when used, only you will know it’s not one of your original teeth. It is made up of 3 main parts, the root, a securing post, and the replacement tooth itself.

What is the procedure for having an implant?
At the initial consultation, your dentist will talk you through the treatment and discuss the options available. You will have X-rays taken to determine the shape and quality of the bone, and impressions will be taken for study casts. Sometimes you will have a CBCT 3D scan in our in-house scanner. This will allow your dentist to check for nearby anatomical structures and assist in developing a personalised treatment plan tailored to your requirements.

You will then receive a treatment plan in the post, with all procedures and costs fully explained. When you agree to have the treatment carried out, Wensleydale’s implant treatment coordinator will contact you and arrange a convenient appointment for the placement of implants. This is carried out here at Wensleydale Dental Practice.

At this stage, a titanium rod is inserted into the jaw, which then fuses with the bone. The titanium is extremely tissue friendly, and the bone grows onto the titanium surface. This is called osseointegration. We normally allow the implant to fuse with the bone without load for about 12 – 14 weeks. This allows time for the bone tissue to form a strong bond with the implant.

Two weeks after your implant has been placed, we will require you to return to the practice for a quick post-operative assessment. This is just to ensure that the area is healing well and to remove any sutures that may have been placed.

Once the initial healing and anchoring have taken place, your impressions will be taken, which the “tooth” section of your implant will be designed and made from. In addition to impressions, the top of the implant will be exposed, and a healing cap will be fitted. In some cases, a temporary restoration can be fitted at this point.

Approximately 2 weeks later, your new permanent tooth will be ready and fitted!

The implant systems

Our implants are made of biologically neutral pure titanium. As the human body tolerates it, the possibility of rejection is greatly reduced thanks to the characteristics of the material.

To keep them touch-proof, the implants are packed in sterile glass: the supporting screw is put inside the superstructure and can only be removed right before the insertion of the implant. The rough surface of the implants enhances the perfect fit and healing of the “new root”. The special shape of the implants ensures ideal fixing directly after the placement of the implant and protects the jawbone during chewing since the implant perfectly adjusts to its physiological characteristics.

Implants are available in different diameters and lengths that provide a solution for all implant problems, and the size is chosen depending on your situation.
